Polygamy and William Branham

Critics of Bro. William Branham, most notably John Collins, allege that he promoted polygamy. In this article we will review the accusations and see what he said on this topic.

Divorce and Polygamy

In three sermons, Bro. Branham compared the sin of polygamy and the sin of divorce. In his comparison, he stated his belief that divorce without cause was a greater sin than polygamy. Critics take his statements from these sermons out of context to purposely mislead their readers.

The divorce courts in America produce more divorces, by our women, than all the rest of the nations. The morals in our country is lower, and divorces, than it is in France or Italy, where prostitution is on the street. So, but they are prostitutes; ours is married women trying to live with several men, and several married men trying to live with other women. In the nations where they have polygamy, it’s a thousand times better. And, yet, polygamy is wrong, we know. But, just show how degraded we are.

What did Bro. Branham say?

Bro. Branham plainly and explicitly stated he did not believe in polygamy.

Now, you remember, don’t you say that I believe in polygamy; I don’t.

There are some perverts who claim to follow the teachings of Bro. Branham and do practice polygamy, and they falsely claim Bro. Branham promoted it. To our knowledge, all been excommunicated from message churches. Polygamy in modern times is a sexual perversion.

The Branham Movement is widely diverse, and some people twist Bro. Branham’s statements to whatever ends they desire. Polygamy is clearly condemned in the New Testament and was clearly condemned by Bro. Branham as noted already in this article.

The FLDS Church claims Jesus Christ endorsed polygamy, but that does not make it true. People can claim Bro. Branham endorsed polygamy, but that does not make it true.

The purpose of this website is not to defend perverts, but to defend William Branham and the truth he stood for.

Covenant of Polygamy

Bro. Branham in a 1965 sermon used the phrase “Covenant of Polygamy” to express how God permitted polygamy in the Old Testament times. This phrase was a term Bro. Branham coined to describe the manner in which God accepted people, like Abraham, David, and Solomon, who all had multiple wives and concubines. Taken in context of his full teachings on the subject, it is clear he was not supporting the continuation of polygamy, but merely explaining how God once tolerated the institution of polygamy.

Dishonest Critics

Once again, the critics expose themselves as dishonest. While they openly share the quotes of Bro. Branham that seem to ambiguously endorse polygamy, they completely ignore and fail to share with their readers the statements where Bro. Branham unequivocally rejected polygamy. How can we trust people to tell us the truth when we can see how clearly they manipulate the facts?

Well said brother. It was not from the beginning. God made one Eve who is part of his flesh and bone to Adam in the beginning. Like God permitted divorce for Israel because of their hardened heart, He allowed polygamy in the old Testament. But it was not His will. Even Jesus said polygamy was not from the Beginning. Many ministers who are in polygamy want some excuse to show that they are not wrong taking Bro. Branham’s quote and defile his name.
